Steinman Pin Puller
The Client
DePuy International
The Need
DePuy required a solution to meet surgeons’ demands. Existing pin-pulling devices were difficult to use requiring manual operation especially in the hard cortical bone. DePuy needed an independent orthopaedic design resource that would understand the nature of the existing product and offer something more functional in a clinical setting.
The project was initiated with the intention of developing a single custom instrument. DePuy set stringent time and budget guidelines with specific functionality targets. This project called for a trusted company with a proven track record for results. Enztec was the logical candidate.
"We have found Enztec very easy to deal with and they have always showed high commitment to achieving tight deadlines whilst maintaining quality of output”.
Grant Meller, Design Engineer for DePuy International
The Solution
Enztec initiated the full design and management of the entire project. Given their established relationship with DePuy, minimal input was needed.
The starting point for the project was a preliminary design concept and collaboration with engineers. From there, a final product concept was devised. This encompassed all the client’s expectations, while adhering to regulatory and quality requirements. The entire project was achieved within the engineering parameters specified. Within only two days of commencement, a mock-up of the working instrument was presented to the client – from this a comprehensive design was compiled, and a fully functional prototype delivered. Enztec was also responsible for the final manufacture of 10 definitive instruments.
The Outcome
Enztec’s solution far exceeded that imagined by the client and the surgeon. As a result of great innovation and creativity a new style of pin puller was realised. The IP relating to this product is secured by the client, with Enztec being credited as a co-inventor for their design input.
“This is fantastic! If there are X surgeons in the world, I believe X will want one of these instruments”.
