The Need
The nature of this project demanded a unique and original approach. Stryker called for a manufacturer that would offer specialist experience and independence. Based in the USA, Stryker looked for a company with the ability to fulfill its distinctive needs. Enztec was the clear choice. The project was led through Stryker South Pacific headquartered in Australia.
The Solution
Formulated to complement the surgical technique, Enztec initiated a design-led project to produce and manufacture a complete MIH instrument set. The overriding design input was: “design the instruments to fit the procedure, not modify the procedure to fit the instruments”.
The core surgical team comprised of professionals in Australia and New Zealand with input from the USA and Europe to help create distinctive instruments. Intensive Enztec and surgeon collaboration resulted in rapid development cycles, giving quantum advances in both the procedure and instrumentation. This achieved a functional but also aesthetic result.
Throughout the project, monthly reporting and forecasts were maintained according to budget. Tough time frames were followed at every stage, with no compromise in product quality. Time from project inception to instrument release was only 6 months. This included the design phase, through prototype creation for cadaver laboratory, then sample instruments for clinical testing.
Final IP resides with the client for the products created. While initial manufacturing was carried out by Stryker, intense demand called for increased manufacturing capabilities. Enztec was again able to take over, and continues to manufacture the instrument set.
The Outcome
Enztec provided comprehensive knowledge and development systems from conception to end production. The resulting products achieved financial success and kudos from the surgical community.
The adoption of these instruments was much greater than anticipated and strong sales continue worldwide, particularly in European and Asian markets.
